Project Descriptions: Canal Locks Mechanism Analysis. The Lowell National Historical Park (LNHP) was interested in having UML engineering students analyze the canal locks system in order to develop a design for an automated spring. Professor Charmchi designed the Fluid Mechanics course so that students were able to apply the principles of hydrostatics and fluid mechanics to analyze the forces and torque acting on the canal lock system. Through the course and S-L project, students developed technical reports on design and engineering modeling.

Learning objectives met by the S-L project were for students to:

  • Apply the principles of hydrostatics and fluid mechanics
  • Analyze the forces and torque acting on a canal lock
  • Develop design reports
