Community partners listed above connected students with approximately 90 individuals with assistive technology needs and their care providers. Projects of students were initiated between both fall 2005 and spring 2006 semesters of this capstone course. The majority of partner organizations contacted the Assistive Technology Center (EE) with specific requests for assistance. Many of the partner organizations also sent representatives to meet with EE student classes and present an overview of their organization and client needs. Students then followed up with organizational site and client visits. Students also engaged in onsite partner teams, such as medical care staff and clients, to develop and tailor their work for their respective project efforts.

For the Electrical and Computer Engineering Capstone I course, teams of approximately five students developed a business plan to design and develop a product which would be useful to some segment of the disadvantaged community. In doing research for the product, students interacted with care providers, individuals who may be an end user of their developed products, and associated agencies that might make use of final products. The collective ideas were in many cases used to generate proposals for student Capstone II Projects.

Course objectives met by the s-l project:

  • Develop a business plan to fund the design and development of a product
  • Interaction with prospective clients, end users of the developed product
  • Meet with clients and care providers to select appropriate assistive technology project for Capstone II 16.499.

  • Clients participate as partners in project selection
  • Assistive technology projects shaped through client and care provider feedback
