Biosketch
Michael has previously served stints as a faculty member at The College of New Jersey and California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. In these roles, he has developed several courses in Civil Engineering, including through international programs to Egypt and Australia. He has served as an advisor of several student organizations, and has played several roles in faculty governance, as well. He is a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Accredited Professional in Building Design and Construction, and leads a Sustainability Engineering study abroad program to Australia through GlobaLinks Learning Abroad.
He has carried out research in several areas, including traffic control for high-volume work zones, Intelligent Transportation Systems infrastructure, community-engaged roadway design, and traffic data requirements for pavement management, including research for Texas and New Jersey Departments of Transportation. His dissertation is on the development and enhancement of adaptive traffic signal control systems incorporating metaheuristics.
Michael has also worked in the transportation industry for several years. He served as a design engineer for HNTB Corporation and STV, Inc., carrying out roadway design projects for New Jersey Department of Transportation and Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, among other clients. He also served as a junior engineer with the New York State Department of Transportation. He is a licensed professional engineer in New Jersey and Texas.
Michael is a member of several professional organizations, including American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE), Intelligent Transportation Society of America (ITSA), and the Transportation Research Board (TRB). He has also been inducted into Tau Beta Pi, the National Engineering Honor Society, and Chi Epsilon, the Civil Engineering National Honor Society. He has a minor in theater, and has acted and directed in a number of productions, medium-sized and small. He is also a lousy bassist and a long-ago disc jockey.
