The Smart Pillbox

A device to track and alert a person when to take multiple medications

Tejal R. Patel

Abstract

The Smart Pillbox is a pillbox with timed alerts for multiple compartments that provide prescription medication users with a more organized and reliable medication tracking method. It is designed to help people who take multiple medications to better track their medicine intake.  Studies have shown that patients are increasingly expected to take multiple medications, and that failure to take them properly poses a real medical concern.

There are five components to the Smart Pillbox device: the microcontroller BS2-IC, the time-keeping chip DS1302, the LCD BPI-216, four pushbuttons, and six LED’s. The user turns the device on and uses the pushbuttons to select, scroll, display, set and reset the clock. At the beginning of the day, the patient sets the alert time for each compartment of the device using buttons and a display screen.  When it is time to take a particular medication, a light corresponding to the medication’s compartment goes on, and stays on until the patient pushes a button to indicate that he or she has taken the medication.
