The Circle Time Apparatus

A Wireless System that Allows Persons with Limited Mobility to Operate Electronic Devices

Designer: Lawrence Poitier

Abstract

The circle time apparatus provides an innovative method to enhance the environmental awareness and independence of special needs individuals enrolled at Shore Educational Collaborative. The Circle Time Apparatus achieves this goal by implementing a wireless system that senses when jelly bean switches are pushed, and then broadcasts the resultant sensory data. The data is used to control any electronic device plugged into the system.

Most of Shore Educational Collaborative clients have limited mobility. Consequently, many of the clients are unable to operate devices that are essential to regular day-to-day tasks. Taking the aforementioned concepts into consideration, the definitive purpose of the Circle Time Apparatus is to provide special needs individuals with the ability to perform simple day-to-day activities, such as creating a meal, without the risk of causing injury to themselves or others. Upon completion, the Circle Time Apparatus was delivered to Shore Educational Collaborative in Chelsea, Massachusetts.
