Graduate School of Education

A Message from the Dean

anita-optWelcome to the Graduate School of Education. We are one of six colleges at the University of Massachusetts Lowell serving undergraduate and graduate students.  While we only grant graduate degrees, we do offer undergraduates the opportunity to enroll in either the STEM Teaching Minor or the Education Minor.  We offer a Master of Education degree at the graduate level for those of you who are hoping to become an elementary or a secondary teacher.  If you are seeking to advance your career through graduate study, we have master's and education specialist (Ed.S. formerly CAGS) degrees some of which provide additional licensure for Massachusetts teachers.  For the past few years we have delivered some of our degree programs online, providing high-quality coursework with the flexibility that busy professionals need.  Our online and on-campus programs are taught by the same experienced faculty.

Our master's and Ed.S. degrees are practitioner-oriented, but we also offer three doctoral programs designed to develop leaders who are prepared to transform education through their understanding of theory and practice and their ability to conduct original research into topics of importance to the field.

No school of education can operate successfully without partnerships.  We are fortunate to work with many school districts throughout the Merrimack Valley, in particular Lowell, Lawrence, Methuen, and Dracut.  We engage in professional development work with teachers through grant funded initiatives, as well as collaborating in mentoring preservice teachers and aspiring principals.  We also work in partnership with the Lowell National Historical Park and jointly run the highly successful Tsongas Industrial History Center, offering place-based field experiences for students (K-16) not only in industrial history but also in science and engineering related topics.

This is an exciting time to be in education because there are so many initiatives happening at the federal and state level that have the potential to transform K-16 education.  I look forward to hearing from you and hope that you will also contact faculty for information about our programs.  Why not try a course prior to matriculation?  We are sure you will be pleased with the quality and our commitment to supporting your work.  I encourage you to join us and complete your graduate education at the University of Massachusetts Lowell's Graduate School of Education.

With best wishes,
Anita Greenwood
