Environmental and Emergency Management offers training to provide you with the information needed to respond to emergency situations and to maintain a safe work environment. This includes Lab Safety and Compliance training, as well as Bloodborne Pathogen/Biosafety Training. The schedule for upcoming trainings in below.

Lab Safety Training


Laboratory safety and compliance training is required annually by EPA, MADEP, OSHA and UMass Lowell for all laboratory personnel working in UMass Lowell laboratories. All faculty, staff, graduate students, teaching assistants, research assistants, researchers and other paid employees must annually attend one (two-hour) EEM-EHS lab safety and compliance training session. This training is offered monthly. Those whose certification will expire can attend and keep their UMass Lowell lab privileges current. It is the responsibility of the faculty member who oversees the lab to assure that all workers are EEM lab-trained and certified.

OSHA BBP-Biosafety Training


The EEM-EHS Department offers OSHA-Bloodborne Pathogens (BBP)/ Biosafety training to employees, students, faculty and staff that will work in laboratories or potentially will be in contact with blood, body fluids, tissues, biopsies, cell lines, or other potentially infectious materials of human origin. These workers considered at risk of occupational exposure to BBP, and require training, adequate personal protective equipment and to be offered the Hepatitis B vaccination at no cost to them. OSHA-BBP training is valid for one year and workers at risk must attend training annually. This training is a requirement for principal investigators registering their biological research projects with the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC). Basic principles and Biosafety are included in this training.
