Media & Recognition

The university has made great strides over the past few years with regards to sustainability and greenhouse gas reduction initiatives. It’s been recognized for its efforts too:
  • UMass Lowell received the Pinnacle Award (highest recognition) in Excellence in Commuter Options (ECO) from the MA Department of Transportation and MassRIDES for its efforts in working to improve transportation on and around campus.
  • UMass Lowell has consistently been recognized by Tree Campus USA since 2011 and maintains its status as a Tree Campus USA University. “Tree Campus USA recognizes college and university campuses that: Effectively manage their campus trees; Develop connectivity with the community beyond campus borders to foster healthy, urban forests; Strive to engage their student population utilizing service learning opportunities centered on campus, and community, forestry efforts.” (Tree Campus USA)
  • UMass Lowell is the first College/University in New England to achieve GREENGUARD certification. The GREENGUARD Environmental Institute aims to protect human health and improve quality of life by enhancing indoor air quality and reducing people’s exposure to chemicals and other pollutants. All certified products must meet stringent chemical emissions standards based on established criteria from key public health agencies. GREENGUARD Certification is broadly recognized and accepted by sustainable building programs and building codes worldwide. Program references are made in LEED 2009 credits, Green Globes, CHPS, and Green Guide for Health Care Credits.
  • UMass Lowell has also received great recognition in recent years from the state Leading By Example program for its great strides in energy efficiency. The university and members here have been presented awards in both 2012 and 2013.
