Lawrence Mayor's Health Task Force: May 27, 2008 Health Professions in the Merrimack Valley. Presenters: Dr. Karen Devereaux Melillo, PhD, GNP,ANP-BC, FAANP, Professor and Chair, Department of Nursing, University of Massachusetts Lowell and Jackie L. Long-Gooding, M.Ed, RRT-NPSm FAARC, Dean of Health Professsions, Northern Essex Community. Summary: According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2003 National Healthcare Disparities Report, patient-provider communication is negatively impacted when the health care provider is racially or ethnically different from the patient. This workshop will describe health education programs in place to increase the number of socio-ethnically and linguistically diverse healthcare providers in the Merrimack Valley.
