Mike A. Fiddy was born in Portsmouth, England, and attended the University of London. He obtained a first class degree in Physics in 1973, and a Ph.D. in 1977. His thesis topic was the application of the theory of entire functions in optical scattering.
He worked as a post-doctoral research assistant in the Physics Department at Queen Elizabeth College, University of London, and in the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering at University College London. These positions concerned the development of optical techniques for image recovery and optical fiber sensors, respectively. In 1979 he was appointed Lecturer in Physics at Queen Elizabeth College, moving to Kings College London in 1983. During part of 1982, he was visiting associate professor at the Institute of Optics, University of Rochester, and in 1985-86 held a similar position in the Mathematics Department at the Catholic University of America, Washington D.C. In September 1987 he moved to the University of Massachusetts Lowell where he is professor of electrical engineering and was recently elected Head of Department. He is the founder and co-director of CEMOS - the Center for Electromagnetic Materials and Optical Systems.
Dr. Fiddy was on the Editorial Board of the journal Inverse Problems (Institute of Physics) from 1984 to 1990. He is currently on the editorial boards of Waves in Random Media, (Institute of Physics) Multidimensional Systems and Signal Processing (Kluwer) and Optical Computing and Processing (Taylor and Francis) Neural Computing Applications Forum (Malvern), International Journal of Optoelectronics, (Taylor and Francis).
He is a member of the Institute of Physics, Optical Society of America, Society of Photo-Optical and Instrumentation Engineers, Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, IEEE Lasers and Electro-optics Society . He is also an elected member of the Electromagnetics Academy for a five year period from January 1990 in the Institute for Systems and Components.
He has been a conference organiser and chair for SPIE, PIERS and OSA meetings. He was also a NATO Workshop organizer: Inverse Problems in Scattering and Imaging, April 1991, Editor of a Special Issue of MSSP and Conference Chair: Inverse Problems in Scattering and Imaging, SPIE San Diego, July 1992 and Inverse Optics III, Orlando, April 1994. Since 1990 he has been a member of an N.S.F. Small Business Innovative Research proposal review panel, and served two terms as President of the New England Chapter of SPIE.
Dr. Fiddy has worked for many years in the field of scattering and inverse problems, spectral estimation and optical signal processing; he has over 75 referreed publications and over 130 conference publications.
