The Art Department is delighted that you are considering a BFA with the University of Massachusetts, Lowell.

Undergraduate application to the Art Department at the University of Massachusetts Lowell is a two-part process. Freshmen applicants for graphic design, fine arts, and photography need to:

  1. 1) submit an application to Undergraduate Admissions and
  2. 2) submit a portfolio directly to the Art Department via

Once the University Admissions Office has reviewed academic performance and the Department has reviewed the portfolio, the University Admissions Office will notify the applicant of the admission decision.

Prospective students are invited to visit the Art Department during one of the open-informational sessions offered each semester. Applicants are especially encouraged to attend the October 4, 2014 Open House, where faculty will be available for on-site portfolio review and consultation.

Application due dates for the Academic Year beginning Fall Semester, 2015:
Freshman student portfolios are due November 15th (early action) and no later than February 15th 2015 (regular deadline).

Transfer Student Admission
Transfer student portfolios are due January 10th 2015 (for Fall 2015 Admission). For transfers and late applicants for fall 2015, we just added a late summer portfolio due date of August 20th with decisions back to you by August 27th.

Internal Applicant Deadline
If you are already a UML undergraduate student who wants to change majors and be considered for the BFA program, you are an internal applicant. The deadline to review internal portfolios is May 2, 2015.

What we want in an applicant Portfolio

A freshman portfolio consists of 10 original works of art (including up to 2 video or time-based works) that represent your best artwork/design/photos, and it should also demonstrate independent thought and the diversity of your experience in visual arts. The portfolio should include drawings from direct observation. The portfolio also may include works in 2-D media (such as painting, photography, printmaking) 3D media (such as ceramic, sculpture, and installations), and/ or time-based media (animation, motion graphics, video, and software based ideas) that convey your strengths. Your portfolio can include finished pieces, works in progress, and sketchbooks, but please note the status of the work in the description.

Applicants must submit their portfolio online via for most timely consideration.

Images in the form of JPEG, video (.MOV, .WMV, .FLV) or PDF documents may all be uploaded. For good image quality and a fast upload, it is recommended that the image files be sized no larger than 1220px @ 72dpi, and video files kept under 60MB each. For all technical assistance in this process, applicants can access the SlideRoom help desk.

SlideRoom provides a text area to submit information that is useful in understanding the work in the images. Applicants are requested to use this feature to specify the size, medium, and date of completion of each piece. Descriptions of the assignments, concepts or processes involved in the making of the work may also be included.

If an applicant cannot submit a portfolio via SlideRoom for technology reasons, then applicants may submit their portfolios by mail to:

While the department will make every effort to ensure the safety of your materials, we will not be responsible for items lost or damaged in transit either direction. Digital submissions are the best way to ensure the safety of originals. Please be sure to call the department (978-934-3494) and let us know if you are mailing your portfolio.

Successful applicants will receive a letter from University Admissions detailing the terms of acceptance. If an applicant’s portfolio fails review, applicants who are accepted to the University may take freshman level art courses and resubmit well-graded work resulting from these courses to the portfolio review after the first semester.
