For the second consecutive year Adobe MAX has selected a unique group of creative professionals, from various disciplines to join us at their creative conference. They’ll be joining Adobe MAX as on-the-ground MAX reporters and sharing their insights, thoughts (on sessions and keynotes) and personal experiences on social media. Our own UMass Lowell Art Department design student, Sarah Croughwell has been invited to be a MAX reporter. Congratualtions Sarah! Learn more about Adobe MAX Insiders.
Greetings! And welcome back to students, faculty and staff to the 2013-2014 academic year. I hope you have had a creative and productive summer.
This is an exciting time for the Art Department! First of all, we have moved! We will be enjoying our new facilities as of September 1st (photos to be posted soon…).
Mahoney now houses the Art Department Office (Suite 1), full time faculty offices (Mahoney 215 and 216), conference room (Mahoney 214), the print lab (Mahoney 110), 3 beautiful and spacious computer labs (Mahoney 103, 111 and 206) and a wonderful new University Gallery (Mahoney 108). The Photography program has moved to Dugan, which has been completely renovated and transformed into state of the art facilities. Most of our Fine Arts studios are now consolidated in Dugan. The new facilities were designed by the architectural firm Cambridge Seven Associates. The renovations include a beautiful critique/gallery space for students work, great individual studio space for advanced students, a new Foundations room and a new Mixed-Media lab along with beautiful new photo darkrooms. The Cage where students can borrow digital and photo equipment is also housed in Dugan. In addition, we have expanded our square footage and class offerings with a fourth computer lab in OLeary 300B. Drawing also occupies a new and renovated studio in Dining Facilities (former bookstore building).
Also, we are growing as a department. Students can now learn and benefit from the expertise of two new tenure-track faculty: Pouya Afshar (Animation) and Ingrid Hess (Graphic Design).
Pouya Afshar is an alumnus from the California Institute of Arts’ Character Animation department and a recent graduate of the University of California Los Angeles Graduate Department of Film and Television. He has received prestigious awards, in particular a Walt Disney scholarship. His films have been featured in galleries and festivals nationally and internationally. Before joining us, he was working as faculty for the Art Institute of California in Hollywood.
Ingrid Hess has a Master of Fine Arts in Graphic Design from Indiana University, Bloomington, IN. She was Assistant Professor of Graphic Design at SUNY, Brockport, NY. She has held several positions as Senior Designer and has written designed and illustrated numerous books. Her current research focuses on the study of Fair Trade in the Caribbean.
New faculty, new energy and beautiful space! I anticipate that these wonderful changes will bring inspiration and a stimulating year for all.

Next time you're in the neighborhood of the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center, look up. Boston Cyberarts and the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority commission public media art for the giant digital canvas. The next round of the "Art on the Marquee" series opens May 1 and showcases work by seven Massachusetts college students, three by UMass Lowell art students.
From Tuesday, April 29th through Friday, May 2, 2014, the Dugan Art Gallery will show work by UML undergraduates Hannah McGrath, Joe Amico, and Jiayi Lin, three of the winners of the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center’s “Art on the Marquee,” the second annual statewide student competition. The work exhibited in Dugan Gallery will also be shown in Boston through June.
