The goals of the School of Health and Environment's “Healthy Campus Campaign” project are to contribute to a more sustainable, livable campus environment and promote improved better physical health. The project will create a model partnership for improving health on an urban campus.
A partnership between faculty and staff from the School’s Physical Therapy Department and the UML’s Campus Recreation Center, the project builds upon the “March into May” walking program, the “Choose to Lose” and “Biggest Loser” weight management programs, as well as menu nutrition changes with Aramark.
To promote physical activity and improve nutrition, the team will conduct surveys and focus groups to understand the needs of students, staff and faculty. Through changes in the environment, the group will implement strategies such as walking and bicycling. A major thrust of the project is to strengthen partnerships across the campus and collaborate with administration to institutionalize the changes.
