Financial AidEach spring, the Department of Work Environment accepts applications from interested students for a limited number of teaching and research assistantships. Criteria and Eligibility Teaching and research assistantships are open to all graduate students who register for full time study (at least nine credits). Assignments may be either full time (18 hours per week) or half time (nine hours per week). Appointments may be for one or two semesters. Description of Positions Teaching Assistant:Position can involve a variety of different tasks, depending on the faculty member’s needs, the course demands, and the student’s skills. Teaching is not typically the focus of these positions. The majority of ones time is spent assisting the professor with classroom responsibilities, including grading homework assignments, running laboratories and “help sessions,” and proctoring examinations. Research Assistant: Positions involve working with an individual faculty member towards the goals of a specific research project, usually funded by an external grant or contract. These positions are available through the faculty members and vary from year to year according to the external support awarded. NIOSH Traineeships:The Department receives funds from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) for traineeships. U.S. citizens and permanent residents are eligible. Application Deadline: Students interested in support should submit a written application no later than April 15. Forms are located in the main office in Kitson Hall 200. Awards TAs and RAs are generally assigned in June for the following academic year. In general, students are selected for positions based on their qualifications, including courses taken, grades obtained and specific research interests. RA and TA positions are usually awarded by the department by June for the following academic year (both semesters). Additional awards are sometimes made later in the summer.
