Scholarly Interests

Research Interests: reliability and validity of tests and measurements used in orthopedic physical therapy, clinical reasoning and expert practice, physical therapy intervention for the oncology patient, intervention strategies for musculoskeletal injuries, prevention of musculoskeletal injuries.

Teaching Responsibilities: Entry-Level Doctor of Physical Therapy Program; Musculoskeletal Physical Therapy III, Professional Issues and Clinical Practice in Physical Therapy.

Bio Sketch

Dr. Seymour has been a member of the faculty since 1992, teaching in the entry level and transitional Doctorate programs in the areas of Musculoskeletal Physical Therapy, Documentation, Practice Issues, Clinical Reasoning/Decision Making, Physical Therapy Management of Breast Cancer, Lymphedema management and Research Methods. She is also a practicing clinician who has 22 years experience, with NDT certification in Adult Hemiplegia (1986), and an OCS designation earned in 1997. Additionally, Dr. Seymour has 12 years of clinical experience in the management of the breast cancer patient and lymphedema.

Dr. Seymour has an earned Ph.D. in Motor Control/Motor Learning and a minor in Research Methods/Statistics from The University of Toledo. She has taken many continuing education courses in oncology, orthopedic, and neurological physical therapy. Additionally, she has participated in many seminars with a focus on educational technology, assessment and teaching/learning strategies offered through The University of Massachusetts Lowell Faculty Teaching Center. Of particular interest to her is the use of instructional strategies that promote “deep” learning.

Dr. Seymour contributed the musculoskeletal chapter to The National Therapy Examination Review and Study Guide in 2004. She has also authored ten peer-reviewed publications over the last seven years in the areas of teaching/learning strategies, physical rehabilitation following breast cancer, and musculoskeletal physical therapy. She has been active in the community in several ways. She has been a volunteer for the Littleton Council on Aging, The Academy of Notre Dame Tyngsboro, and the Littleton Public Schools. Additionally, she has given lectures to the Winchester Parkinson’s Support Group, Nashoba Nursing, Littleton Council on Aging, Lowell General Hospital, and Health South in Concord New Hampshire on various topics related to her expertise. She has also coordinated clinical research between Winchester Hospital, The Littleton Council on Aging, Northeast Rehabilitation, Emerson Hospital and The University of Massachusetts Lowell.   Dr. Seymour is also the director of the tDPT program at The University of Massachusetts Lowell.

Dr. Seymour is active in the university community as a Member of University Enrichment Task Force Committee which provides institutes and workshops for faculty development.  She is also a member of Faculty Teaching Center educational programming committee, responsible for development of workshop coursework
