MASTER OF MUSIC IN MUSIC TEACHING

For students seeking a career as a music educator in a school setting, a Master of Music in Music Teaching program that includes music education and general education course work followed by an apprentice teaching practicum is available at the University. The Master of Music in Music Teaching, leading to initial licensure is the graduate segment of the music teacher preparation certification program at the University. Upon completion of the M.M. degree program, students may file an application to the Massachusetts Department of Education for initial licensure and become fully certified teachers in Massachusetts.

• Students currently enrolled in Bachelor of Music in Music Studies Dual Degree Program
Students who successfully complete the Bachelor of Music in Music Studies program maintaining a 3.0 GPA will be prepared to enter the Master of Music in Music Teaching Program leading towards initial Licensure. Students may apply to this program during their senior year. Acceptance is not automatic; an application for admission to the Graduate School must be filed, and all requirements for admission to the Graduate School must be met.  Students enrolling directly from the Bachelor of Music in Music Studies program will have the GRE requirement waived.

• Students with undergraduate music and music education degrees from other institutions seeking Initial Licensure in Massachusetts
For those students who did not attend UMass Lowell as a Music Studies undergrad but possess either an equivalent undergraduate degree in music education or an undergraduate degree in music. A transcript review will be conducted to determine what if any equivalency undergraduate courses need to be satisfied for official admittance into the program.
