Scholarly Interests

Recent research projects have focused on how unions, domestic violence groups and community-based organizations integrate strategic communications into broader change strategies.

Bio Sketch

Dr. Ryan studies how social groups organize for change, paying particular attention to the role of mass media and communication in those change efforts. She is a member of MRAP (Movement/Media Research and Action Project), a national network of social researchers and activists. Her most recent book, with David Croteau and William Hoynes,is Rhyming Hope and History:  Social Movement Scholarship and Activism (University of Minnesota Press, 2005). Dr. Ryan also supervises field work.
