During the 2005/2006 academic year, nearly 80 UML students are majoring in sociology. The Department also offers a minor in this discipline.
Seven full-time professors teach in the Sociology Department. They bring a wide range of expertise in areas as diverse as gender studies, genocide, immigration, criminology and deviance, environmental and political sociology and other timely topics. They all are united by their common desire for social change and justice. Many are affiliated with University research centers such as the Center for Women and Work and the Peace and Conflict Studies Institute. The majority have written books about their areas of expertise.
The Sociology Department is committed to applying sociological principles and concepts through field work and research within community organizations, especially those in the Lowell community. Students are encouraged to take advantage of these field opportunities.
