Lowell Celebrates Kerouac Festival

October 2-5, 2008

Lowell Celebrates Kerouac! Inc. (LCK!) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote a better understanding and appreciation of Jack Kerouac's life and literature. Events are sponsored by LCK, UMass Lowell, and Pollard Memorial Library They are open to the public and free of charge unless otherwise noted. Donations are accepted. They will be held at various sites in Lowell with two events at the University. This year's festival is entitled "From the Merrimack to Desolation Peak--The 50th Anniversary of the Publication of Jack Kerouac's 'The Dharma Bums'." Check out their website for more information.

Massachusetts Poetry Festival

October 10-12, 2008

The Massachusetts Poetry Festival is a three-day celebration of the poets, poetry, and literary heritage of a state whose contribution to American poetry is unsurpassed in the nation. Join us as we pay tribute to the poets and writers of the past while experiencing the creative energy of today’s literary artists. This first-ever, state-wide event will include readings by renowned and emerging poets, teacher workshops, performance poetry, films & music, programs for children and young writers, literary heritage tours, a small press fair, poetry in the streets, and much more

The 2008 issue of "The Offering" at the Intercollegiate Poetry Showcase (part of the Mass Poetry Festival) will be released. "The Offering" is the official literary journal of the University featuring the work of students, faculty, staff, and alumni from across campus.  Please join us at the Intercollegiate Poetry Showcase on Friday Oct. 10, 2008, from 3 to 4:30 p.m., at the Visitor Center of Lowell National Historical Park, 246 Market Street. Several area colleges will have readers from MFA and undergraduate programs.  A reception is to follow at the Brush Art Gallery at 256 Market St., featuring "The Offering" release. Guest Speakers

On Wednesday, October 15, 2008, from 4 to 5:30 p.m., in O'Leary 222, the English Department is sponsoring a talk by Professor Michael Drout of Wheaton College entitled "J.R.R. Tolkien, 'Beowulf, and The Lord of the Rings'." All students, faculty, and staff are invited to attend.

Sigma Tau Delta

Sigma Tau Delta is the official English Department Honor Society. This semester, it is sponsoring some events for interested students and other events for inducted members. Events are sponsored by the group and the English Department. If you are interested in learning more about becoming a member, you may contact English Department Professors Barefield or Judge for more information.

Sigma Tau Delta members meetings are held every Thursday from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in O'Leary Library Room 412.

On Thursday, October 2, 2008, there will be a student-led book discussion of Vonnegut's "Slaughterhouse Five" from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in McGauvran 410. Food will be served.

On Wednesday, October 22, 2008, there will be a student-led book discussion of Toni Morrison's "Beloved" from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in McGauvran 410. Food will be served.

On Wednesday, November 19, 2008, French Professor Carole Salmon (Cultural Studies Department) will be giving a talk entitled "Sociolinguistics: French Speakers in Louisiana and Lowell." It will be held from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in O'Leary 222.

On Thursday, November 20, 2008, there will be a student-led book discussion of Khaled Hosseini's "The Kite Runner" from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in McGauvran 410. Food will be served. This event is also sponsored by the Student Activities Department.

Concord Festival of Authors Events at UML

Now in its 16th year, the Concord Festival of Authors is the preeminent annual literary event in the Boston area. Programs are held in several venues in Concord, a town that revels in its historic and literary heritage, and in Lowell, a city whose history and diversity are the source of its vitality. The mission of the Foundation is to promote books and authors, to present the work of contemporary authors to the public, and to provide forums for authors to discuss their work. An Evening with Andre Dubus III (Comley-Lane Theatre, Mahoney Hall)

On Wednesday, October 29, 2008, at 7:30 p.m., author of the #1 bestseller House of Sand and Fog, Andre Dubus III will read from and discuss The Garden of Last Days, his new, big-hearted, painful, page-turning novel about sex and parenthood and honor and masculinity.

Advising Open House

The English Department will hold an advising open house on Friday, October 24, 2008, from 2 to 4 p.m. in O'Leary 412. Join faculty, staff, and students to eat, drink, and be advised! Faculty will be available to discuss your course schedule. It's also a great way to meet other students. We hope to see you there!

Off-Broadway Players Present Two Plays

Martin McDonagh’s The Pillowman, October 16-19, 2008, and Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, December 4-7, 2008.  As always, special $1 student admission on opening nights (Thursdays). Shows are held at the Comley-Lane Theatre, Mahoney Hall.
