Prospective Students

The Department of Environmental, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences (EEAS) covers the study of the broad spectrum of knowledge concerning the earth and its atmosphere.  Typically both undergraduate and graduate students have a keen interest in preserving our planet's natural resources, as well as learning about the effects of weather, air pollution, and other natural or manmade conditions on our environment.  Its program of instruction attracts students from the Merrimack Valley and all over the country who want a unique, interdisciplinary academic program that will prepare them for a variety of careers, including those in meteorology, geology or environmental science.

Real-World Application
The Department has a long tradition of fostering a culture of academic achievement among its students. As a result, the EEAS Department has a good reputation among area firms that employ atmospheric science, environmental science, or geoscience graduates. Furthermore, each of these programs has a certain uniqueness within the UMass system and all directly serves local industry.

The EEAS Department has a "top notch" faculty in terms of academic quality and dedication to all aspects of its programs.

As a group, the EEAS faculty has been professionally active to an extraordinary degree.   Collectively the faculty are extremely active in publishing refereed papers, giving invited talks and presentations at meetings, mentoring undergraduate research projects, and overseeing master of science theses and doctoral dissertations. Also many have written books and special publications.

Center of Excellence in Research
The Department is an internationally recognized center of excellence in research.  It competes with marked success for research funds.  The Department houses training and research facilities including the Weather Laboratory, the Environmental Analysis Laboratory, the Air Pollution Laboratory and a Geographical Information Systems.  The Department is also affiliated with the Center for Atmospheric Research, a leader in the field.  These learning centers provide research opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate students.
