Scholarly Interests

Macromolecular engineering, i.e., the preparation of well-defined polymers with controlled architecture, molecular weight, molecular weight distribution and end-functionalities by living cationic, anionic and ring-opening polymerizations; polymerization kinetics and mechanisms; synthesis, characterization and properties of new specialty polymers; new thermoplastic elastomers based on block and graft copolymers, end-functional polymers, organic-inorganic hybrid materials, amphiphilic block copolymers for directed self-assembly of nanostructures and polymers for medical applications.

Bio Sketch

Prof. Rudolf Faust received his Diploma in Chemistry in 1975, and Ph.D. in Colloid Chemistry in 1978 from Eotvos Lorand University, Budapest, Hungary. Subsequently, he was a Visiting Scientist, at the Institute of Polymer Science, The University of Akron, before joining the University of Massachusetts Lowell (formerly University of Lowell) in 1988.

He is currently Professor of Chemistry in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. He was an invited Visiting Professor at the University of Debrecen, Debrecen, Hungary (1993 and 1996), Universite P. et M. Curie, Paris, France (1996), and University of Mainz, Mainz, Germany (1996).

He has served the American Chemical Society as Chairman, Membership Committee, Industrial Sponsors (1990-1994), Chairman, Workshop Committee, (1995-1996), Member, Programming Committee, (1994-1996) of the Polymer Division and as Canvassing Board Member of the George A. Olah Award in Hydrocarbon or Petroleum Chemistry, ACS (formerly ACS Award in Petroleum Chemistry) (2001-2003). He was the co-editor of ACS Symposia Series 665 (1997) and co-chair of the International Symposium on Ionic Polymerizations, Boston, June 30-July 4, 2003. In 2006 he received the Ralph Milkovich Memorial Lecturer Award from the University of Akron. He currently serves as Editor of Polymer Bulletin (1998-present) and as Editorial Board Member of the Journal of Macromolecular Science (1991-present). He has published over 200 papers and 18 patents.
