Educational Background
He received a B.B.A. degree from the University of Texas at Austin and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of California Berkeley.
Scholarly Interests
Dr. Sloan’s current research focuses on sustainable operations/green manufacturing, with particular emphasis on medical devices. He also conducts research on shop-floor control and production scheduling in the semiconductor industry. In the course of his research, he has worked with firms such as Intel, Motorola, and AMD. Professor Sloan’s work has been published in academic journals such as the International Journal of Production Research, Production and Operations Management, IEEE Transactions on Semiconductor Manufacturing, Journal of the Operational Research Society, and IIE Transactions.
Bio Sketch
Thomas Sloan is an assistant professor of management in the department’s Manufacturing/Management Information Systems Group.
He is a member of several professional organizations including the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS), the Production and Operations Management Society (POMS), the Decision Sciences Institute (DSI), and APICS—The Association for Operations Management. He is the faculty advisor for the Operations Management Group, which is the APICS student chapter at UMass Lowell.
Previously, he taught at the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida. Prior to his graduate studies, Professor Sloan worked as a production manager for Frito-Lay, Inc.
