In support of our mission to assist sustainable regional economic and social development, UMass Lowell has made a long-term commitment to increase participation and graduation rates of minority students and women in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields.  This is especially important in light of regional economic developments towards biotechnology, nanotechnology, green chemistry, etc. One of the most exciting initiatives to support these efforts is our participation in the NSF-funded Urban Massachusetts Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (UMLSAMP) grant program.  

Alliance institutions include UMass Boston (lead campus), UMass Lowell, UMass Dartmouth, Wentworth Institute of Technology, Bunker Hill Community College, Roxbury Community College, Middlesex Community College, and Bristol Community College. This program started in November of 2006.

The UMLSAMP Program Director is Mr. Marshall Milner (UMass Boston). UMass Lowell's primary partner in this program is Middlesex Community College (MCC). Dr. Joyce T. Gibson represents the University of Massachusetts Lowell in the Governing Board. Provost Mary-Jane McCarthy represents MCC in the Governing Board; however, she has delegated project liaison responsibilities to Assistant Dean Darcy Orellana. The site coordinators are:
