Assessment of Student Learning Outcomes
Pilot Study on State Wide Assessment
UMass Lowell is one of seven campuses selected for participation in a spring 2013 Pilot Study for a Model for Statewide Assessment. This pilot work will evaluate the feasibility of assessing student learning outcomes for eventual state level aggregation by sector. Data collected in this pilot will not be publicly reported.
The pilot study will focus on assessing three student learning outcomes
- Critical thinking
- Quantitative Literacy
- Written Communication
Samples of student work (student artifacts or products) will be collected at the campus level and assessed at the state level by experienced faculty scorers. Student work will be assessed using the American Association of Colleges and University’s (AACU) LEAP VALUE rubrics (attached). Briefly, the plan is to identify students who have earned either between 105 and 120 credit hours as of the first day of the spring semester 2013. Faculty with one or more of these students enrolled in their class(es) this semester will be contacted and asked if they are giving an assignment that addresses one or more of the three student learning outcomes noted above. If so, the faculty member will be asked if they are willing to submit student work completed for this assignment. A sample of students and corresponding student work will be drawn from faculty who indicate they are willing to participate.
You may be one of the faculty members with identified students in your class. We hope that you will be willing to participate in the study. Please be assured that all identifying information (including both student and faculty identifiers) will be removed from the student work collected. Student work to be assessed by faculty scorers at the state level will not be able to be traced back to the student, the course or the faculty member.
