Community Health & Sustainability - Environmental Health

Mission

The mission of the B.S. Program in Environmental Health to broadly prepare students for careers or graduate studies in the broad and increasingly important field of environmental health.  The program supports environmental public health, by providing students with:  
  1. strong environmental health science and practice foundations; 
  2. a broad understanding of the social, political, scientific, and economic underpinnings of environmental health problems, solutions, and practice; 
  3. strong skills in research, critical thinking, and communications; and, 
  4. pragmatic training and field experiences.  
It prepares students for a broad range of careers in government, industry, and the non-profit sector that can improve our quality of life and health.  And it undertakes research and service in support of communities, government agencies, and other stakeholders.  The Environmental Health B.S. degree program provides students with current scientific, health and policy knowledge to ensure a new generation of prepared, up-to-date practitioners.  The profession’s scientific and theoretical foundations are integrated with practice based skills obtained through service learning and research. The program trains broadly oriented, systems-thinking practitioners ready to jump right into careers in local public health

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the B.S. degree program in Environmental Health at UML, we expect that our graduates will be able to:
  1. Have a core understanding of environmental health problems and their causes, including an understanding of the fundamental impacts of human activities on human and environmental health and the processes by which these activities cause damage
  2. Understand the relationship between environmental and workplace exposures and acute and chronic disease in humans, including understanding the complexity of social, environmental, and genetic factors in disease etiology
  3. Apply knowledge from physiology, chemistry, toxicology and epidemiology to understand the physiological processes involved in environmentally related illness
  4. Understand options and tools for the evaluation of and prevention of local environmental health problems, including an ability to understand and conduct basic field investigations, risk assessments and alternatives assessments
  5. Identify prevention strategies for a range of environmental health problems including the pros and cons of various control technologies and approaches, applying critical analysis and reasoning skills to problem solving.
  6. Address environmental health concerns with different stakeholder groups, including appropriately communicating risk information to different stakeholder groups
  7. Understand the economic, historical, and political/legal contexts of environmental health problems and solutions and the challenges that practitioners face
  8. Be able to identify and access resources for researching environmental health problems and critically evaluate research
